Candida Brief Lives Grimm Tales Wind in the Willows Two Thousand Years She Stoops to Conquer Ivanov

The new season has been designed to provide a dramatic perspective on society from both the past and present. I have long wanted to include both Shaw and Chekhov in our programmes and, in my final season as Club Director, here they are!
The season does not have a theme as such but all drama is about the ways in which we relate to those around us, about love and purpose and conflicts both internal and societal. The one sentence description of our plays can never do them justice, you need to experience them for yourselves.
'Candida' raises the question of what a woman wants and needs to fulfil her and who therefore can most meet those needs. 'Brief Live's is a reflection on what a man needs and how too that can best be addressed. It is always difficult to contemplate a season without Alan Bennett and 'Wind in the Willows' is there because children (at heart) of all ages cannot fail to find it magical and funny and wistful, have we not all wished to be accepted as we would most wish to be seen ?
Mike Leigh, one of our most successful contemporary writers, has much to say on life in the twenty first century and '2,000 Years' does so in an honest direct way which must leave us reflecting on our own place in the familial setting. 'Ivanov', is a wonderful Chekhovian adventure into self reflection even paranoia, demonstrating with wonderful irony the seriousness with which we all take ourselves and how ridiculous that is in the larger panoply of society.'Something about Sunday' is the brand new play by Randolph Morse, contemporay America comes much closer to nineteenth century Russia following, as it does, in succession to Ivanov. We close with 'She Stoops to Conquer' and if anyone remains in any doubt as to who is the more manipulative sex this play will certainly answer it !!
