I will be having a get-together of anyone interested in hearing more about the production, and go through some of the songs with the Musical Director Roger Roser, on Sunday November 9th at 7.30 in the Theatre Foyer. As there is singing and some dancing involved, I shall be starting rehearsals earlier than a straight play demands. This will probably consist of once or twice a week to start with, but the whole cast would not necessarily be needed at all of these rehearsals, just those songs in which they are involved. I shall rehearse all the songs first, then the dance, followed by the play. “Oh What a Lovely War” is performed by a cast of ten men and five women who appear as Pierrots and Pierettes, who proceed to stage the “Game of the First World War ”. It is essentially ensemble playing. Those named characters who appear e.g. the MC, General Haig, Sir John French, Sir Henry Wilson etc. will be played by the same actors, but they will also be required to take on other parts. Singing has to be strong, but if sung by Tommies, not necessarily beautifully! “Silent Night” accompanied by harmonica , and “Roses of Picardy”,(with one of the ladies) are the exceptions. The ladies in the cast are required to double up on parts, although all will be nurses. Various nationalities, upper class voices and dialects are needed. “Keep the Home Fires Burning” needs to be well-sung- the others acted out.
